Natural History of my Love for Sour Things

Unripe green—
the green of papaya and lime,
tingle of sea-grapes as they pop
between your teeth.
                         One loop
of camachile caught
between herbacious
and mild.
                       I did not call
to you because of my wild
hunger for the unsoftened
tang of mangoes—
                                A star-
fruit cuts two ways: flying
wheel, outrigger canoe.
How long can you hold
            what puckers in your mouth
until the seed finally surrenders.
