Original Sin

Does it matter whether it was pear 
or persimmon, winesap or sugar 
apple, soursop, fig? And were they 

really the very first who wished to slake 
a thirst, feed a hunger for a thing they 
didn't know they wanted until they did? 

Under the trees, in wartime, no moon—
someone digs a hole beneath the trees. 
Father or grandmother, enemy soldier.
